High School of Economics and Finance - HS 4895 is situated in New York. Located in the heart of the financial district, the School occupies a 10-story building that was once New York University’s business school.
The school’s aim is to provide an enriching environment as well as to prepare students for the economics and financial business world and college. Graduates have junior and senior year internships as well as many hours of community service.
Students at the High School of Economics and Finance are trained and educated for careers to enter directly from high school or after attending college programs. Its students have opportunities to interact with finance professionals, learn from industry experts and take field trips to nearby businesses. Mentors help students with schoolwork and advice. Students are encouraged to work at businesses and nonprofit organizations starting with volunteer community service and continuing into unpaid and later paid internships. Academic improvement allows students to participate in the Nasdaq Incentive Plan where shares are accumulated to exchange for cash at graduation.
About half of the students participate in some kind of after-school activity, including internships. A community organization runs a program called “Downtown After 3,” which offers tutoring as well as instruction in computers, karate, and fashion design. There are also a literary magazine, a Science Olympiad, arts, and an investment club. The school has no gym, but its basketball teams, which practice at Chelsea Piers, are successful, and the school also fields bowling, handball, softball, and cross country teams.
