The first Anacostia Economic Summit was hosted by Operation HOPE on May 3, 2006. The Summit was attended by over 500 of Washington, D.C.’s leading financial business, community and political leaders to promote Silver Rights and economic empowerment in the district’s community east of the river.
The summit focused on economically empowering the underserved communities East of the River that are going through major economic revitalizations and explore ways for responsible development. Business, political and community leaders spoke on business development, jobs, education, financial literacy and home ownership. The summit, through a series of interactive “silver rights†plenary sessions, explored ways to encourage revitalization in and around Anacostia, as well as all low-wealth and under-served communities throughout the country.
These under-served communities represent the last bastion of lost capitalism in America, and opportunity rich, emerging market opportunities for leaders in the private sector, government and community willing to commit to building a new and educated stakeholder class in America. The Summit included plenary sessions on the Silver Rights Movement and an all access Q&A session for press. Featured speakers included Mayor Anthony Williams, U.S. Comptroller of the Currency John C. Dugan, United States Treasurer Anna Cabral, HOPE national spokesman Ambassador Andrew Young, World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Dr. Dorothy Height, D.C. Council member Marion Barry, Summit Moderator Kelvin Boston, among others.
